2018-2019 Regular Season Edition

Frequently Asked Questions

So...what's new?
I put my coding hat on over the summer and made some enhancements to the pool. Check these out:

Miscellaneous Entries
As an addition to the Ultimate Entry, there are two other specialized entries that you might find interesting. One is Social Butterflies that consists of the top three most picked players in each round. As well there is Social Rejects that consist of, you guessed it, the top three least picked players in each round. Thanks to John Burns for this feature suggestion.

Entry Comparison
You can now compare the entry you are viewing with three other entries at the same time. The initial three entries will be the Ultimate Entry, Social Butterflies and Social Rejects, but you can change each entry by selecting a new one from the drop-down list above the entry name. Entry names are sorted alphabetically for ease of finding them in the list. Click on "Select to see Current Standings" to view a condensed version of the current standings to help with what entries you wish to compare.

Twitter
Finally, while this isn't really new, I do happen to have a John's Hockey Pool Twitter account where I have posted limited information about daily pool updates throughout the regular season. I am planning on expanding the content that I tweet to include interesting and relevant information to what is happening in the pool. Feel free to follow my account at https://twitter.com/johnshockeypool and we shall see how this turns out.

I am looking at the standings page and wondering what I can do from here?

Well, there is a blue bar that goes along the top of page that gives you access to all sorts of information:

There are also other links you can click on throughout the pool:

Entry Name These are the entries found on the Standings page. Clicking on the entry will show that entry's performance in the pool. The entry's players are listed by their regular season points. Note that the bottom 5 players do not count towards the entry's total points. This is explained in greater detail below. Inactive players are listed in red. Miscellaneous Stats include a link to the Ultimate Entry, and an Entry Comparison link to allow you to compare this entry with any other entry in the pool. There is also a list of Prize Winning Pool Entries, Your Pool Peformance (broken down by month) and Your Round Performance, showing each rounds point totals compared with the top 3 players in each round. Clicking on the Round Name in this area will show you a table of the round in the following format:

  • Blue Background: Entry's Active player.
  • Red Background: Entry's Inactive player.
  • Grey Background: Active players not picked by this entry.

  • Social Butterflies entry consists of the top three most popular picked players in each round.

NOTE: Inactive players are listed in red. The Picked By # link shows what entries picked the player.

Additionally, click on "Select to see Current Standings" to view a condensed version of the current standings to help with what entries you wish to compare.

    Inactive List? Sounds serious.

The Inactive list is a list of players who have missed games due to injury, suspensions, personal reasons or being demoted to the minors. It does not include players who did not play due to being a healthy scratch.

Wait a minute. Bubba Smith played in the last game but was injured during the game. Why is he not listed as inactive?

Players are only added to the inactive list if they actually miss a game played. Bubba Smith might have left the last game, but he could very well play the next game. No point in listing him inactive if he doesn't miss any games.

Hey! Billy Smith is having an awesome season, but he is not in the pool. Why?

Like you would have picked him anyway.

A very complex algorithm is uses to build the rounds for the pool. Billy Smith is either a rookie, or didn't have good enough previous season(s) stats to qualify him to be in the pool. Don't worry though, if he is as good as you claim, he should be in the pool next year.

Oh man, my entry is sucking huge! How do I get more points?

Players in the pool get points for goals and assists during the game. If a player scores 2 goals, then he gets 2 points. If a player gets 2 assists, then he gets 2 points. If a player has 2 goals and 1 assist, then he gets 3 points. Now if the game goes to a shootout and a player scores, it does not count as a goal. Shootout goals do not go towards a players point totals.

As for the Goalie Round, goalies get 2 points for a win and a bonus point for a shutout. If a game is tied at 0 going into the shootout, both goalies receive a bonus point for a shutout regardless of the outcome.

I have five awesome players that are listed as N/A in my entry's stats. How come?

These players are at the bottom of your entry. How awesome can they be?

The idea here is to somewhat protect you from injuries to players you may have picked. So for example, if a player has a season ending injury, he could eventually fall into your bottom five and no longer count towards your total points. No problem as he is not gaining any more points for you anyway. Now competing entries may not have the same injured player as you, but they too also have their bottom five players that do not count towards their points. So if their bottom five player gets points, and your injured bottom five player doesn't, it won't matter as in either case there is no gain for the entry. Ultimately, this is an attempt to keep your entry competitive even though you picked players made of glass.

So I was totalling up my new points for the night but my total is higher than what is listed as my gain. What's going on?

Remember that your entry's bottom 5 players do not count towards your entry's point total (See the previous question). If there was only one player in your entry that gained points, but these points were in the bottom 5, your gain would still be 0. Now to really bake your noodle, consider the following scenarios:

POS Player Name Team PTS New
    PTS
This is a sample entry where the Total Points for this entry is 3 with a Gain of 0.
    45 Bubba Smith ANA 2 0
    46 Bucky Jones WSH 1 0
    N/A Tubby Tanks BOS 0 0
    N/A Joe Blow TOR 0 0

POS Player Name Team PTS New
    PTS
In this scenario, Tubby Tanks gained 1 new point which ended up bumping him into 46th position and moving Bucky Jones into the bottom 5. In this case the Total Points for this entry is still 3 and the Gain is 0 even though there is 1 New Point.
    45 Bubba Smith ANA 2 0
    46 Tubby Tanks BOS 1 1
    N/A Bucky Jones WSH 1 0
    N/A Joe Blow TOR 0 0

POS Player Name Team PTS New
    PTS
In this scenario, Tubby Tanks gained 2 new points which bumped him into 46th position and moved Bucky Jones into the bottom 5. In this case the Total Points for this entry is now 4 and there is a Gain of 1 even though there are 2 New Points.
    45 Bubba Smith ANA 2 0
    46 Tubby Tanks BOS 2 2
    N/A Bucky Jones WSH 1 0
    N/A Joe Blow TOR 0 0

Rest assured your gain number will be correct. Essentially it is the difference between your total points from previous update to the current update.

I picked Bucky Jones and according to another web site he doesn't have the same amount of points that is listed in this pool. Which is right?

Of course the other web site is wrong and this pool is always right.

Player and team stats to update this pool are collected using the NHL.com website. This being said, it is very possible that the NHL reviewed a goal and may have determined that someone else got an assist or a goal was changed to another player after this pool was updated. If this is the case, the next time the pool is updated, the player's points will be adjusted accordingly and and the "Including games up to" date will also state "Including Corrections". This will be your notification of this type of change to the players stats.

I am like a Pool Junkie and need a daily fix. How often will this pool be updated?

There will be a genuine effort to update the pool on a daily basis. The previous nights results will be updated the next morning, usually before lunch. This however is not an guarantee. There may be events or incidents that may cause a delay in updates. Don't worry though, it shouldn't be too long before you can get your next fix.

I notice that you have an entry in your own pool. Don't you find that to be a conflict of interest?

No...and I have the intention of winning it all every year.

I'm a pretty honest guy and take a lot of pride in what I do with the pool. I want it to get bigger and better every year and that would not be possible if I didn't run an honest pool. I'm still going to win though!

How long has John's Hockey Pool been around?

    I am in year 9 of a multi-year deal.

I would like to enter your pool next year. Can I?

You bet you can! And to help you remember, you can subscribe to the John's Hockey Pool email list. I use this list to update participants of important information regarding the pool. Including when the entry form will be available next year.

I have a question that is not listed here. Can I contact you?

Click the Contact button on the top menu of this page for my email address. I will try to answer your question in a timely fashion.

Is there anything else I should know?

    Maybe. I'll let you know.
